How To Get A Job You Will Love
Hope For The Holidays: This Series Continues With A Very Special Learning Opportunity For The HireFriday Candidate Community.
We are a community, and a social media movement where job seekers connect. We connect people to resources, and opportunities that advance your career, and help you land a job in the shortest time possible. That’s why I’m thrilled to be joining the team of world-class career professionals for The Brazen Careerist “Brazen U” Job Search Boot Camp.
I hope you’ll join me and Brazen U for a two-week “How to Get a Job You Will Love” bootcamp. We will teach you how to form a successful job search strategy, how to leverage social media in your search, insider secrets on how to interview with top recruiters, how to shape your resume and cover letter, speed resume review, and much more. You’ll learn from the famous people human resources, recruiting, and social media. Such luminaries included Dan Schwabel, Joshua Waldman, Jodi Glickman, Dain Lewis, and Rebecca Rapple.
I firmly believe that everyone should have a job they love. Most people just need to learn how to get it. The reason I’m teaching during this bootcamp is that I am fully committed to seeing candidates land in the right job, at the right time, for the right reason. Job seekers, deserve to be happy. We will teach you how.
I will be offering three scholarships to the Brazen U’s Job Search Bootcamp during the next Social Media Club’s Tweet Up on January 19, 2012. The Social Media Club of Nashville is partnering with the Nashville Career Transitions Group, and our HireFriday’s #HFChat community. This will be a nation-wide event/tweet-up for our entire online community. On January 19th, I’m on a panel with Jennifer Way from Way Solutions, Mathew LeBlanc a recruiter for ADP, and Shannon VanCuren is a trainer with Airs The Right Thing. Our topic is one you won’t want to miss: Optimizing Your LinkedIn Profile. Job seekers, please don’t miss this event. It will be live on Twitter from 6-8 p.m. Central Time, and 7-9 p.m. Eastern Time. I will be live podcasting from the event, and career transitions groups around the US will be joining in on the fun. We will be broadcasting this event over UStream.
So that’s my holiday gift to you: two great learning opportunities that will take you from HireFriday to HiredFriday.

Hope for the holidays. As this series continues it occurs to me how difficult it is to be unemployed before the holidays. That’s why I believe in Compassionate HR, not just in theory, but rather in practice. We have to remember that while we enjoy the plenty around us, that there are people that don’t have anything at all. Let’s not put them out of our heart.

Hope For The Holidays
If you’re in need of help during the holidays, there’s a few things you can do to help you get through it. As long as there is the breath of life in your body there is hope. Hang on to that. Here’s a few tips to get you through the holidays:
- Call The United Way, and ask for the name of agencies in your city that can address your specific needs.
- Contact your state’s “One-Stop” shop for job seekers. You can find many resources there, everything from workshops with resume writers, career coaches, and recruiters. Often these “One-Stop” agencies have access to computers, printers, resources, and job boards. You might even find a group of supportive people that want to help you.
- Attend your local job search focus group. JobHunt.org has numerous resources. Most cities have several vibrant career transitions groups. Here’s the website to JFSG in Cincinnati and The Career Transitions Group in Nashville.
- Participate in a special edition of #HFChat on Twitter January 19th, 2012. We are going to be discussing LinkedIn for Job Search, and I’ve acquired the donation of career books, resume packages, prizes, and the time of extraordinarily talented career professionals who are donating anywhere between 30 minutes to an hour of their time to help you with your resume, to help optimizing your LinkedIn profile. While these prizes will be awarded in January, rather than December, according to my research the rate of depression is much higher in January. I know this all too well.
- Get counseling. Every city has resources for counseling for people who can’t afford a psychologist. Don’t beat yourself up if you feel you need help this time of year. You’d be surprised to know that most of America is in therapy this time year. I think this is a good thing. The holidays are even stressful for rich people, so don’t feel bad. You’re in good company.
As my series “Hope For The Holidays” continues, I will share special tips, tools, and ways you can enjoy the holidays, even if you don’t have the money to enjoy the holidays like those around you–you can still have fun. Don’t ever be ashamed to get the help you need. There’s shame in getting help, but I’m telling you this, it’s a shame not to–and that’s the truth.
Your Job Search Pal,
HRMargo

This is the 6th post in my “hope for the holidays” series. My first message to job seekers everywhere is: Never lose faith in yourself.
This is a core message that job hunters need to keep near and dear to their hearts. When we begin losing faith in ourselves, it has a ripple effect in how others perceive us. If you want to make a good impression, it begins with confidence, and a true belief in your skills, and abilities. The danger is that when you are in the midst of a career transition, you are thrown off balance. The core strength of your existence can be put on edge. Here’s your hope for the holidays: you are not alone. HireFriday, and our HFChat in particular reminds job seekers around the world that they are neither alone, nor forgotten.
We are here for you. In fact, I’m willing to make myself available, free of charge on Christmas Eve. The entire day, I will be taking calls, and emails from our social media community members who need a shred of hope during a very trying time in their lives. You see, I understand like perhaps few others do. It wasn’t long ago that I experienced the exact feelings you have. I have walked in your shoes. That is why I am steadfast in holding the torch of hope and faith for job seekers.
There are recruiters that have difficult to fill positions. Believe me, they want to find you as much as you want to find them. There are talent communities online that want your participation, Brave New Talent, for instance. In fact, I just interviewed Gautam Ghosh who is one of the leaders of Brave New Talent. Each day counting down now until Christmas, I will be bringing you one, or more key tips that can help you get through the holidays. I am particularly targeting those of you do not presently have a job. Remember, just because you don’t have a job today, doesn’t mean you won’t have a job tomorrow. Will you please do me a favor? Leave me a comment below. Let me know what you think. Thanks!
Hang in there job seekers, and know HireFriday’s HFChat community is in your corner,
HRMargo
And so it is, the strongest among us are those brave enough to be vulnerable. Amelia Earhart once said that courage is the price that life exacts for granting peace.

Your truth will give you strength, alas it will set you free
How many among us are strong enough to say, “this hurts, this economy is crushing my spirit.” I’m here to tell you that if you are unemployed right before Christmas and Chanukah that all is not lost. There are those of us who have felt the same way you do. The strongest among us fail, and grow and learn from their mistakes. This is a time for you to take stock of yourself, where you are, and where you want to go. It is the humble that rise up. Looking for work is humbling. Whether you are passively looking, in active pursuit of work, you can take comfort in knowing there is an entire community that cares about your journey.
I’ve switched the focus of HireFriday on Twitter to the #HFChat. I’ve done this because during that hour we get more visitors than we used to get in a whole day. At the beginning of this year, my resolution was to grow HireFriday to one million strong. We’ve far surpassed that. With the help of the HireFriday Leadership Team: Tom Bolt, and Cyndy Trivella, we have reached 5.8 million people. Think about that for a moment. Our reach, resonance, and relevance has a broader reach than we had ever imagined. Why do you think that is? It’s because of people like you–who’ve shared a part of your heart, and soul with me.
So my friends, keep your spirits up during the holidays. There is hope, as long as there is breath in your body, there is strength. You know the most beautiful thing of all, is that each and every day we get a clean slate. Enjoy your slate, and know that you have a friend in us.
Join us this Friday for #HFChat Noon-1 Eastern Time, 11 Central for your weekly dose of job search goodness.
Sincerely-Your job search pal,
HRMargo

Be The Life Of The Party, Not The "Talk" Of The Party
It’s December. You are looking for a job. Are you thinking about the most creative, and interesting ways to find one? Have you considered jump starting your job search by launching a high profile professional presence on Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn? Listen job seekers, if you are a member of our HireFriday Community, participate in HFChat, this is no time to be shy. It’s ok to toot your horn. In fact, I implore you to toot it so loud that everyone hears you…you can do this without being noisy. In fact you can be quite slick in how you present yourself at holiday parties, networking events, coffee shops, informational interviews, meetings, and professional association events. You can, and should participate in Twitter chats. This is an excellent way to get noticed, and found by recruiters, and companies. You don’t have to be an extrovert to be creative your job search campaign. Introverts are very successful with their online presence because they have the safety of the computer screen to shield them from over stimulation. You have to ask yourself one critical question: How and where do you recharge your inner battery, and where can you make the biggest splash.
Here’s my top 5 tips for staying on top of your game:
- Secure speaking engagements for the coming year with the organizations to which you belong: This is a cool way to get your name out there in your industry, and get some personal brand recognition. Public speaking is a brilliant way to position yourself in the market place, and can be a great way to receive the recognition you deserve.
- Create a list of questions in advance targeted toward the people you want to meet. Make these questions industry specific, and relevant to the person you want to meet. People like to talk about themselves.
- Ask questions: come prepared with a few conversation starters in case you find yourself suddenly scared, or feeling insecure: It happens to the best of us, we are in a crowd of people we don’t know at a holiday party, and suddenly we are overcome with the jitters. You can overcome this by finding out in advance who is going to be at the party. Run a Google search on the people you want to meet. Find out about their background, interests and accomplishments.
- Don’t drink too much at holiday parties, or events: You never know who has a camera, or whether or not an unflattering picture will wind up on Facebook, or Twitter. Beware of people who can be “brand killers.”
- Be the smart one at the party, not the life of the party. There’s a time and place for everything. If you love working the room, by all means do so, particularly if that’s one of your skills. However, don’t be the goon who dances like a fool, or worse who thinks s/he looks good while dancing. If you don’t know how you look when you dance, be sure to check it out before it winds up on YouTube without you even knowing it. There’s good publicity and bad publicity.

You are not Brett Michaels, Sorry. He Can Get Away With It, You Can't.
When you are looking for a job, you have to be the guardian of your image, and online reputation. No one will take better care of you than you. So be sure you are the smart one at the party. Make sure that don’t do or say anything that will offend or embarrass your boss. If you are passively looking for a job while employed, that’s incredibly important. The last thing you want is to find yourself fired before you are ready to leave. If you are unemployed, and in an active pursuit of a job, the holidays are a monumental opportunity to find and secure a position…or at the very least get on the short list for the position you want when it comes open.
Tomorrow, I will continue the series with more secret sauce…job search tips…and encouragement. Encouragement, is perhaps what we need most when job hunting, so hang in there.
Your job search pal,
@HRMargo
