Do you have job search fatigue

Job Search Fatigue.  What is it?  If you find yourself identifying with any of the following statements,  you might have it:

“I’m tired, I give up, I’m sick of job hunting.”  ”I couldn’t possibly apply for one more job.”   “If I have to spend 45 minutes filling out yet another online job application, I’ll scream.”  ”I’ve talked to that recruiter twice, and he never called me back to let me know what happened.” “I’ve passed out so many business cards at networking events, my hands hurt.”  ”I’ve attended so many professional associations in the past two months, I’m practically broke.” “If feel as if my resume’s been lost in a black hole, I never hear back”.

Job search fatigue is real.  In fact, it’s a job hunt killer.  Job search fatigue can not only slow you down, it can murder your morale.  If you’ve been looking for a job for more than 3 to 6 months, you’ve probably grown weary of the job hunt.  If you’ve been looking for a job for a year or longer, you’re probably exhausted.  Some job seekers get so fatigued from the search they give up, retreat, or distract themselves with other activities that keep them from getting the job they want.  One thing’s for sure, job search fatigue is real.  How do you combat it?  How can you transform your discouragement into encouragement?  Where can you replenish your well-spring of support?  That is precisely what we are going to discuss on HFChat this Friday.  Please join us 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Pacific, 11-12 Central and Noon-1 Eastern time.  All you have to do is logon to Twitter, and follow the hashtag #HFChat.   Here are this week’s questions.  Think about these questions, and bring your own.

  1. What are the common symptoms of job search fatigue?
  2. How can you overcome job search fatigue?
  3. Where can you go for help?
  4. What can you do to prevent job search fatigue?

These questions will certainly bring up a lot of feelings, and opinions from job seekers, and career professionals alike.  I look forward to hearing from you.  Please bring your questions.  I’ll be hosting this week.  As the Founder of HireFriday, and HFChat I look forward to being of service to you and our entire community.  We’ve had some amazing guest hosts this year from a variety of disciplines.  Next year promises to be even better.  You are what makes HFChat special.  Won’t you please join us, and tell your friends?

Thanks so much!

Facebook, Job Search, and You!

How many of you have considered using Facebook to boost your job search?  Today, we discussed just that.  There were so many great thoughts, I would like to share a few with you.  Here’s a new job search bumper sticker: friends help friends find jobs.  So, it’s logical that your Facebook friends (even the ones you don’t know) want to help you find a job.  So, let’s give it a go.  Here are my ideas for how to use Facebook to find a job:

  1. Let your friends know you are looking (create a Hire Me campaign). See my vizualize.me example from earlier in the week.
  2. Use the Facebook time line to create graphics that feature your strongest skills.
  3. Be a story teller: the story is you, and your career-your strengths, your proudest accomplishments, paint a picture using words about what you can do.
  4. Remember it’s about them, not you-focus more on what you can do for the company.
  5. Conduct company research. Get out your targeted company list, find them on Facebook, read their page daily, identify the thought leaders, and go get ‘em.
  6. Find a friend who knows someone at the company where you want to work, and ask them for a referral.
  7. There are many recruiter centric groups on Facebook, join them, and connect with a friendly recruiter who can point you to a recruiter that specializes in your occupation and industry.
  8. Job Boards are now using Facebook to post jobs, check them out.
  9. Investigate Apps like Beknown, and Branchout: build your contact network, and ask for referrals.
  10. Check out Quora: it’s a great source of information and discussion.
  11. There’s a new kind on the Facebook block called Cachinko.  They’re connecting people with jobs. They are job matching careers, and people on Facebook.
  12. 76% of recruiters screen candidates on Facebook vs. 48% on LinkedIn. Source: http://t.co/4TQ5Nc1u #
  13. Conduct searches of your occupation, and industry.  Facebook has groups for most, and they are a great place to network.
  14. Finally, if you are looking for a job, remember what I always say: imprint this in your mind, before every single status update, begin it with the invisible words, “Dear Future Employer.”   Job seekers, clean up your language, and consider what you choose to post will be seen by everyone, including recruiters, and potential employers.

There’s my top 15 tips for using Facebook for a job.  Be sure to check out our HireFriday website.  Our transcripts will be posted soon.  Please leave a comment if you attended today’s HFChat, I’d love to hear you opinions.

We are a community, and a social media movement where job seekers connect.  We connect people to resources, and opportunities that advance your career, and help you land a job in the shortest time possible.  That’s why I’m thrilled to be joining the team of world-class career professionals for The Brazen Careerist “Brazen U” Job Search Boot Camp.

I hope you’ll join me and Brazen U for a two-week “How to Get a Job You Will Love” bootcamp. We will teach you how to form a successful job search strategy, how to leverage social media in your search, insider secrets on how to interview with top recruiters, how to shape your resume and cover letter, speed resume review, and much more.  You’ll learn from the famous people human resources, recruiting, and social media.  Such luminaries included Dan Schwabel, Joshua Waldman, Jodi Glickman, Dain Lewis, and Rebecca Rapple.

I firmly believe that everyone should have a job they love.  Most people just need to learn how to get it.  The reason I’m teaching during this bootcamp is that I am fully committed to seeing candidates land in the right job, at the right time, for the right reason.  Job seekers, deserve to be happy.  We will teach you how.

I will be offering three scholarships to the Brazen U’s Job Search Bootcamp during the next Social Media Club’s Tweet Up on January 19, 2012.  The Social Media Club of Nashville is  partnering with the Nashville Career Transitions Group, and our HireFriday’s #HFChat community.  This will be a nation-wide event/tweet-up for our entire online community.  On January 19th, I’m on a panel with Jennifer Way from Way Solutions, Mathew LeBlanc a recruiter for ADP, and Shannon VanCuren is a trainer with Airs The Right Thing.  Our topic is one you won’t want to miss: Optimizing Your LinkedIn Profile.  Job seekers, please don’t miss this event. It will be live on Twitter from 6-8 p.m. Central Time, and 7-9 p.m. Eastern Time.  I will be live podcasting from the event, and career transitions groups around the US will be joining in on the fun.  We will be broadcasting this event over UStream.

So that’s my holiday gift to you: two great learning opportunities that will take you from HireFriday to HiredFriday.

Hope for the holidays.  As this series continues it occurs to me how difficult it is to be unemployed before the holidays.  That’s why I believe in Compassionate HR, not just in theory, but rather in practice.  We have to remember that while we enjoy the plenty around us, that there are people that don’t have anything at all.  Let’s not put them out of our heart.

gratitude, holidays

Hope For The Holidays

If you’re in need of help during the holidays, there’s a few things you can do to help you get through it.  As long as there is the breath of life in your body there is hope.  Hang on to that.  Here’s a few tips to get you through the holidays:

  1. Call The United Way, and ask for the name of agencies in your city that can address your specific needs.
  2. Contact your state’s “One-Stop” shop for job seekers.  You can find many resources there, everything from workshops with resume writers, career coaches, and recruiters.  Often these “One-Stop” agencies have access to computers, printers, resources, and job boards.  You might even find a group of supportive people that want to help you.
  3. Attend your local job search focus group. JobHunt.org has numerous resources.  Most cities have several vibrant career transitions groups.  Here’s the website to JFSG in Cincinnati and The Career Transitions Group in Nashville.
  4. Participate in a special edition of #HFChat on Twitter January 19th, 2012. We are going to be discussing LinkedIn for Job Search, and I’ve acquired the donation of career books, resume packages, prizes, and the time of extraordinarily talented career professionals who are donating anywhere between 30 minutes to an hour of their time to help you with your resume, to help optimizing your LinkedIn profile.  While these prizes will be awarded in January, rather than December, according to my research the rate of depression is much higher in January.  I know this all too well.
  5. Get counseling.  Every city has resources for counseling for people who can’t afford a psychologist.  Don’t beat yourself up if you feel you need help this time of year.  You’d be surprised to know that most of America is in therapy this time year.  I think this is a good thing.  The holidays are even stressful for rich people, so don’t feel bad.  You’re in good company.

As my series “Hope For The Holidays” continues, I will share special tips, tools, and ways you can enjoy the holidays, even if you don’t have the money to enjoy the holidays like those around you–you can still have fun.  Don’t ever be ashamed to get the help you need.  There’s shame in getting help, but I’m telling you this, it’s a shame not to–and that’s the truth.

Hope For The Holidays: Job Seekers--You Are Not Alone

This is the 6th post in my “hope for the holidays” series.  My first message to job seekers everywhere is: Never lose faith in yourself.

This is a core message that job hunters need to keep near and dear to their hearts.  When we begin losing faith in ourselves, it has a ripple effect in how others perceive us.  If you want to make a good impression, it begins with confidence, and a true belief in your skills, and abilities.  The danger is that when you are in the midst of a career transition, you are thrown off balance.  The core strength of your existence can be put on edge.  Here’s your hope for the holidays: you are not alone.  HireFriday, and our HFChat in particular reminds job seekers around the world that they are neither alone, nor forgotten.

We are here for you.  In fact, I’m willing to make myself available, free of charge on Christmas Eve.  The entire day, I will be taking calls, and emails from our social media community members who need a shred of hope during a very trying time in their lives.  You see, I understand like perhaps few others do.  It wasn’t long ago that I experienced the exact feelings you have.  I have walked in your shoes.  That is why I am steadfast in holding the torch of hope and faith for job seekers.

There are recruiters that have difficult to fill positions.  Believe me, they want to find you as much as you want to find them.  There are talent communities online that want your participation, Brave New Talent, for instance.  In fact, I just interviewed Gautam Ghosh who is one of the leaders of Brave New Talent.  Each day counting down now until Christmas, I will be bringing you one, or more key tips that can help you get through the holidays.  I am particularly targeting those of you do not presently have a job.  Remember, just because you don’t have a job today, doesn’t mean you won’t have a job tomorrow.  Will you please do me a favor?  Leave me a comment below.  Let me know what you think.  Thanks!

Hang in there job seekers, and know HireFriday’s HFChat community is in your corner,
