The holiday season is upon us-quite literally. Sometimes it can feel like a weight on the chest of an unemployed person. Now is the time to breathe, and affirm that you are a super star, as the song goes, “that’s what you are.” Sometimes we have to believe it before we see it. We have to believe in ourselves, and others will believe in us too. Are you empowering your career development, or destroying it? Sometimes we spank our career growth without even knowing it. It’s what I refer to as our blind spot. People can see things about us that we can’t see in ourselves. The fact is you are leaving an impression with everyone who interviews you. During the holidays it is particularly important to affirm your worth. Embrace what you do best, and learn to articulate your strong points. As you do so, you are actually reprogramming your brain, and undoing habituated patterns of negative thinking which can lead to negative behavior.
Does positive thinking always bring about positive results? Not necessarily, but I guarantee you this: negative thinking will not ever reap the results you want. Negative thinking is like a soul sucking vaccume that takes the wind out of your job search sails. Here is an excellent model illustrated by our friends at CareerBuilder. It illustrates that if you do what you love, it is an affirmation of your strengths, and can put you on the path of career realization.

Your Career And You via Career Builder
So in the final analysis, I want to leave you with this thought: Act like you are a success. Live your life as if you are succeeding. Be really clear about what you do best. Learn to articulate your value proposition, and if you need a reminder grab one of us in the HireFriday #HFChat community, and we’ll empower you, reassure you, and be your job search pal during your transition. Some people might think I’m a little sappy pollyanna, but hey somebody has to wave the flay for the candidates who happen to be unemployed. Somebody has to be an career advocate for those people who secretly hate their jobs but feel stuck because they are so afraid of losing their job during this recession we are in (and surviving) and somebody has to get behind both the employed, and unemployed that want to make a change, and care about moving their career forward. The HireFriday Leadership Team does just that. Get in touch with Cyndy Trivella, Tom Bolt, Steve Levy or me. The easiest, and fastest way to reach me is on Twitter just Tweet to @HRMargo. I reply to every tweet. It’s hard to reach me by phone, or email, so just tweet me anytime of the day or night and I promise to get back to you.
One more thing. On January 19, 2012 from 6-8 p.m. Central, 7 to 9 p.m. Eastern Time The Nashville Social Media Club, The Nashville Career Transitions Group, The #HFChat Community are sponsoring an event: Linked In Optimization, Your Job Search, and You. Panelists include world renown experts Jennifer Way, Mathew LeBlance, Shannon VanCuren (and little ole’ me). We are recruiting the best recruiters in the business to tweet live, career focused vendors to donate prizes (like resume packages, fun gifts, linkedIn profile reviews and optimizations, books and cool stuff you can really use in January). Why are we doing this? Because we happen to know for a cold-hard fact that January is the most depressing time of the year to job search. Guess what? We’re going to turn that around. Why? Because we care. We want to remind you (all of you) that you are a super star. That’s what you are. Will you please help us out and share this post with your social network pals? I’d sure appreciate it.

Mobile Apps, Job Search And You
Mobile technology is all the rage for Recruiters, and E-commerce marketing fans. Big brands like Nike, PepsiCo have already jumped on the band wagon. Location-based recruiting to find the best candidates is already taking place, and has been for the past 12 months. What does this mean to job seekers. How will the new mobile technology have an impact on your job search. Should this effect your job hunting strategy? Yes. Will this have a positive impact on your future career. Yes again. If it’s good enough for big brands, large and small companies, and cutting edge recruiting professionals, it’s good enough for you. Just in case you don’t believe me, check out this infographic about mobile technology on the internet. The data is compelling.
Mobile apps are in their infancy. Social recruiting has been going on for the better part of 18 months, but it’s still pretty new too. Heck, the internet is only 15 years old. Jennifer McClure, Talent Management consultant, and internationally know conference speaker suggests that every five years, a new trend will emerge. Last night on my radio show/podcast she articulated information about the human resources industry, and what she, and Laurie Ruettimann plan to discuss during Brazen Careerist’s Social Recruiting Boot Camp.
I suggest that you, dear job seeker stay on top of mobile apps, location based recruiting, and know how recruiters and companies alike are using mobile apps, and mobile technology to find you. No kidding, you can use this technology to your advantage.
- Study location based recruiting (via Craig Fisher, Geoff Webb, and Michael Marlatt).
- Download mobile apps from iTunes (there’s lots of free apps available) experiment with them, and learn how you can use them to source jobs from companies that use mobile post jobs.
- Use Twitter, and LinkedIn to find companies, and groups to push jobs out, and posts through their mobile apps.
- Know that the big brands set up new ways to scan your LinkedIn profile to determine your career interests based on the content in your profile.
- See if they have mobile apps available that can provide you with instant access to the jobs they are posting.
- Use the telephone to determine the business decision maker. That’s the person who’s in a position to hire you. This may differ from company to company.
- Get to know who the recruiters are in your industry and become friendly with them. Find out how they want to be communicated with, and then follow suit.

Don't Fear The Smart Phone
Those are my 7 top tips to leverage mobile technology to find a job. Don’t worry if you don’t have the money for a cell phone, or a mobile phone. There’s plenty of people in the HireFriday Community that are more than willing to help you.
Happy job hunting.

P.S. don’t be afraid of mobile technology, smart phones, and the latest, greatest technology trends. They change frequently. The one thing that will never go out of style is the personal touch.

Going Mobile
When I attended The ERE Expo Everyone was talking about mobile. Mobile recruiting is not something brand new, but it is a movement that has traction. The early adopters are having a lot of success with mobile sourcing, and candidates will benefit tremendously. Last week, I attended a webinar hosted by Jessica Miller Merrell, and Rayanne Thorn. The validated my thoughts, and feelings on this topic. Both ERE, and the webinar hit home several critical concepts.
- Companies are launching mobile apps that will both advertise jobs, and lead applicants directly to their online application (ATS).
- Recruiters are now holding court at public restaurants, and coffee shops, and crowd sourcing candidates through apps on their smartphone. This is a brilliant way to advertise jobs, and a innovative, cost effective way to do on the spot interviews.
- Because digital media, and social networks are becoming more sophisticated each day, tracking metrics is easy, and manageable.
- Building a mobile pipeline of candidates is now possible, and as time goes on will get faster, better, and smarter.
- Candidates benefit because they can now take advantage of mobile apps to source, and access jobs that fit their expertise.
- Everyone wins but the job boards, because now employers don’t have to allocate as much of their budgets because social media is free. Everyone is using it, and the ease of access is a two way street. Candidates get access to recruiters, and thought leaders. Recruiters, and employers can pick the cream of the social media crop, and everybody wins.
On October 24, I’m attending the ERE Innovation Summit at Facebook. I’m excited about this opportunity, and will continue sharing more information with you!

Cameras were rolling as the live stream blasted viral over the web. Key boards were burning from the finger tips of people tweeting rapidly, both at the conference, and inside offices around the world. If you haven’t been paying attention to the feed at EREexpo-it’s not too late. Hurry. You have one more day to reel in the information that’s flowing at lightening speed. Trends were unveiled. Raw data that hasn’t yet seen the light of day was secretly divulged to an exclusive group in a select break out session. A famous football coach (from OSU) gave an inspirational speech that made every recruiter in the room open their minds and take notice. The sponsors stole the show with eye popping exhibits, and open arms. Four words come to mind to describe my first impressions; inclusiveness, encouragement, and intellectual empowerment.
The highlight of the conference for me on both a personal, and professional level, was getting face time with my mentor, Don Ramer, CEO of Arbita. I was thrilled to see Shannon Myers of Walton Research. Elaine Orler stole the show with her information about “The Candidate Experience.” There are no words to describe just how much I liked each of the sessions. This year, I had a different strategy than the previous year. I made a decision to spend time meeting the exhibitors at the Expo, and to interact with the sponsors, and vendor partners. Far too often people go to conferences to only attend the sessions. I found equal value in the time I invested speaking with the people who were bringing the new technology to organizations. That’s where the value is. That’s where the real knowledge is exchanged. It’s the one to one interaction that made the whole experience come to life.
Whether you were new to the occupation, returning to the occupation, a trench practitioner, or an old pro-everyone had a place, everyone learned, everyone grew, and most importantly everyone had an impact. Each person brought something interesting to the conference, be it a fresh perspective, a point of view, a tip, top technical tool, or a new way to solve a problem. What stands out in my mind as memorable is how each presenter brought their own panache, clarity, passion, knowledge, and incisive wisdom.
Old friends embraced, new friends met enthusiastically, and people were gathered in twos, and threes exchanging valuable information. This is what I call a successful conference. ERE Expo would not be complete if it wasn’t for it’s charity poker game. Sure, poker is being played, people are having fun, but did you know that the proceeds of the game go directly to charities that support educational initiatives? This year (and the count isn’t final) $8,000 was raised.
Tomorrow, I’m going to discuss in great detail what I took away from each session. I will then share information about the people I met, and interviewed for this blog. Tonight, I will leave you with this message from Mr. Todd Raphael from ERE.
